Hooking The PS5 Up to a Monitor – How to Guide

Hooking up your PS5 to a computer monitor is a relatively easy and simple task to do. It takes no longer than a couple of minutes if you have the correct supplies need. Gaming on a monitor can offer benefits that a TV’s generally can’t. This is a fantastic option if you would like to play video games in the comfort of your desk. However, this might not be the option for you if you like to sit back and relax on the couch while playing.

Playing your PS5 on a monitor will offer you competitive advantages depending on what kind of display you are using. I personally play on a monitor for increased refresh rates and faster response time. TV’s have significantly slower response times ranging as high as 30ms. With a monitor, you can get refresh rate times as low as 1ms at a fraction of the cost. If you are looking to learn a little bit more about the benefits of playing PS5 on a monitor I have created an article for it.

Connecting PS5 to a Computer Monitor

It really is as simple as I have been telling you, as long as you have a monitor, an HDMI cable, and a PS5. Depending on the inputs your monitor has you may need to pick up an HDMI adapter. Not to worry though, these adapters are inexpensive and can be purchased from any electronic store. Hooking it up to your monitor can be completed in 3 simple steps.

1. Plug your HDMI cable into the HDMI port on your PS5.

2. Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into your monitor’s HDMI input.

3. Power on both devices and switch to the correct input on your monitor.

If you are used to playing on a TV it may look a little bit different when you switch over to the monitor. Within your monitor’s settings, you should be able to alter the visual setting around to fit your needs. You may want to slightly turn up the contrast a bit to make the gameplay more vibrant, your turn up the brightness. Depending on what games you play on your PS5 these settings may vary. If you Having trouble with the ports on the PS5, Screen Rant has a great article about them. Once you have hooked everything all up it is important to maintain your monitor, I have written an article on cleaning your monitor.

Audio Compatibilities

Getting audio can be a little bit more difficult than setting up the display. Regardless of your situation, there is a workaround depending on your needs.

Built In Monitor Speakers

This might sound crazy but some displays come with built-in speakers. If this is your case you will not need any further actions. The HDMI cable that you plugged into the monitor will handle the audio if it has speakers. However, if you are wanting higher quality sound, this may not be the option for you. If you plan on using a mic for the in-game chat this will also not work out too well. Your mic will pick up the audio and your friends will be able to hear it. This can be quite annoying and I would advise against it.

Using a Headset For Your PS5

This is the option that I prefer as it allows for the most optimal audio experience. I find that this is what most PS5 gamers choose to do as well. If you own a headset you should be good to go on audio. However, if you do not, you can pick one up relatively cheap from an electronic store. Depending on the style of headset it may plug directly into the controller, or the console itself. Another suitable option if you do not want to deal with additional cables is a Bluetooth headset. While this might be the most comfortable option, it is not the most economical.

Hooking External Speaker Up to Your PS5

For the ultimate experience, this might be the best fit for you. You can hook up external speakers to your PS5 just as easily as it was to hook up the monitor. Depending on your speakers, audio lines you may need to purchase an adapter but overall, it is quite simple to do. If you plan on playing multiplayer games while socializing with online friends, you might want to skip this option. Hooking up a mic to your console while using external speakers is just asking for an annoying echo. The people you will be socializing online with will be able to hear everything that is happening in your game. However, if you plan to play games solo, this is a fantastic option.
